What an awesome morning at Pennyman Primary School working with the Year 6 children for our ‘Energy Academy Workshops’ funded by Redcar and Cleveland College.
The children learned all about the exciting opportunities in our area with renewable energy and even built their own wind farm; choosing the location and routes for the cables on a map before constructing a working model. They recognised the importance of teamwork and learned how to be an efficient and effective member of their team when problem-solving and working through different solutions.
During the morning, the children also became ‘Energy Engineers’ and very enthusiastically set up their own hydrogen-powered car using a solar panel just outside their classroom – directly in the sun’s path. They waited excitedly till the end of the session to find out if the solar panel had worked.
After a final countdown for the ‘Hydrogen Grand Prix’, they flipped the switch and the motor came to life! A sea of amazed little faces flooded the classroom, especially when one of the cars passed the eight-minute mark for the longest running time powered by hydrogen!
Jaxon, who had taken part in the session, said, “I loved winning the Hydrogen Grand Prix!”
