Nunthorpe Primary School Year 6 children were on top form this morning for the latest ‘Energy Academy Workshop’ funded by Redcar and Cleveland College. The children had a very impressive knowledge base to build from for this interactive science session and we definitely had some young scientists of the future taking part! During the morning, they independently planned and built their own working model of a wind farm and learned all about renewable energy and the important role it will play in Teesside.
They also had the opportunity to become ‘Energy Engineers’ and set up their hydrogen-powered car and considered the possibility of hydrogen being the fuel of the future. Using the solar panel on an overcast day, the children flipped the switch on their hydrocar and…. nothing happened! The British weather hadn’t been on our side today so we switched to our battery packs and watched in awe and wonder as the hydrogen tank level began to rise! After a final countdown for the ‘Hydrogen Grand Prix’, they flipped the switch again and the motor came to life! A buzz of excitement filled the room as the car with the private REG ‘I55AC N3WT0N’ came in first followed closely by ‘N1KOLA TE5LA’.
The energy from the children over the course of the morning was unbelievable and they left enthusiastically talking all about their favourite moments from the workshop!
